The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process to prepare unbaptised adults for membership in the Catholic Church. It is also adapted to include people already baptised into other Christian denominations who wish to become Catholics, or those who have already been baptised as Catholics but have not yet completed their full initiation into the Church.
The RCIA process consists of four time periods for formation or catechesis and three transitional rites celebrated in the midst of the worshipping community. It commences after mid-year and journeys to the following Easter when the sacraments are received; then continues with further group sessions, concluding with Pentecost.
The formation process is within a group setting but each journey is a personal one depending on the needs of those participating. Each person is unique and only takes each step as they are personally ready for it.
